In honor of the anniversary of the signing of the Crown Act. I wanted to share some background on what exactly this day is and why it is special.
What is Crown Day?
First, “The CROWN Act, stands for "Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair” National Crown Day is a celebration of the first signing of a law entitled “The Crown Act” in California to put a stop to discrimination of natural hair in the work place and schools as well. This law went into action on January 1st 2021in the state of California. Since then several states have also signed this act into action, numerous of states have also started to contemplate the act too. Recently, in September of 2020 “the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill at the federal level—meaning, that if approved by Senate and the president, its protections would automatically apply to all 50 states.” This milestone is only the beginning to the long battle of passing the Crown Act in all states. Finally, this act is also near and dear to my heart not only because I wear my hair natural but also because of the fear I have of being discriminated in my present and future life due to my hair. Statistics show that 50% of African-American Women will be sent home from their jobs due to the styling of their hair. My hope is that these statistics change drastically within the near future so that present and future African American Women will never have to go through this.
